Sunflower
My "Science Lab" series features 3-D assemblages created in reclaimed science lab drawers. I collaged vintage maps and children's science books, then painted and arranged them into shapes inspired by video games to create my backgrounds. I arranged a collection of toys and mechanical parts into mechanical flower shapes, and scroll-cut my robot characters from wood to take center stage. Each piece in the series is one of a kind, signed by me front and back, and wired to hang on a wall or stand on a surface.
I collect things I like along the way in life, and try to use them again. This piece, "Sunflower" gets its title from the refractive acrylic lense element I found roadside when our rented RV camper broke down outside Reno on the way to Black Rock City. Markings on the lense indicate US patent #5174649, filed by Precision Solar Controls in 1991. I hung the lense to catch the light in our bedroom window for many years, and finally found a way to use it in my art!
Size is approximately 18 x 13.75 x 4 inches.
