bts...Behind the Scenes

After Facebook moved from Palo Alto to more spacious digs in Menlo Park, they commissioned me to fill the big empty walls of their sales and marketing building.
I learned that Facebook employees sometimes stay in their offices overnight for "hack" events, where they dig in to solve problems. Painting the first mural was to be "mini-hack”--a party with DJ music, food, and games, and anyone who wanted to could help paint the Johnny Botts mural in their offices. For subject matter, they were open to anything. They told me how they like to think about Facebook making new connections when people share information, so I outlined a sketch showing my robots connected.
Besides the initial mural, Facebook gave me free reign to paint other areas of the building. Over a two week period, my team and I painted robots, rockets, daisies, ray guns, and a twenty foot diameter “Wonderball” all over the building, including the two story lobby.
The lobby walls were so tall, we needed "sky-jack" to reach the top! It was fun, and a bit scary to operate!
