bts...Behind the Scenes

I thought I'd share some process shots showing how I've been making my "Studs" pieces.First of all, the paintings are based on Tetris, so I plan out my Tetris shapes, just sketching them on paper. The idea is to spread the colors and shapes fairly evenly. I don't worry that an actual Tetris game would look different. I paint my colors onto vintage maps and paper, and then cut them into the geometric shapes. Each "Stud" is 4 shades of a color to give the illusion of depth, and I am loving how bits of map show through. Finally, I paint my robots on top! Here's a shot of finished pieces at City Art Gallery in San Francisco. Also in the shot--prints on wood that I've been working on.
