bts...Behind the Scenes

Open Studios 2016

I have done reverse-painting on old windows for some time--I love the flat shiny surface of the glass with the paint showing through--but for this Open-Studios series, I'm trying something different.

I'm leaving most of the glass unpainted to reveal secondary paintings underneath. The background paintings are on obsolete floppy disks.

Coming across these disks gave me bitter-sweet memories of my own history around computers. I found disks containing html code I wrote for websites, "screensavers," photos, documents, and help files. Long ago I transferred the "important" data to other media, but not everything.

Painting the disks means saying goodbye to the data on them, but also saying hello to their new purpose--Johnny Botts art!

I have become a fan of the game Tetris on my phone, and borrowed the visual style to paint some of my disks. Tetris was released in 1984 and seems like a perfect nod to the past.

I'm still in process with these paintings, and working on more pieces for the show, but this is what I have so far. Stay tuned, or come to my Open Studios to see the rest:
